I Ching is an ancient divination system that can not only predict a future event but also suggest the possible course of action that can be applied to obtain the most favorable outcome.
The book of changes has been there for thousands of years and has been one of the most referred books in China and East Asia. It is since 1950’s that it has become popular in the west as well.
This ancient work has also played a large role in the development of the concept of Taoism and Confucianism.
Though it is one of the oldest known books with interpretative text developed around 1000 B.C, the true history and the development of this divination system still remains a mystery.
“The I Ching does not offer itself with proofs and results; it does not vaunt itself, nor is it easy to approach. Like a part of nature, it waits until it is discovered. It offers neither facts nor power, but for lovers of self-knowledge, of wisdom — if there be such — it seems to be the right book. To one person its spirit appears as clear as day; to another, shadowy as twilight; to a third, dark as night. He who is not pleased by it does not have to use it, and he who is against it is not obliged to find it true. Let it go forth into the world for the benefit of those who can discern its meaning.” – Carl Jung
Some myths say that the first emperor of China Fu Hsi (2852–2737 B.C.) came across a turtle who had eight symbols on his back. As he was well aware that nature contains principles which can be used to gain true wisdom, he quickly realized how these symbols can be used to study the energy of life on earth.
Thus he concluded that each trigram as composed of three –solid (firm) or broken (firm) can be used to analyze the energy of other life forms on earth as well. This includes but is not limited to sky earth, animals, birds, rocks, stars, animals etc.I ching didvi
One hexagram is composed of two trigrams.
There are a total of 8 possible trigrams and 64 possible hexagrams. The eight trigrams obtained represent the qualities of –father, mother, eldest middle and youngest son, eldest middle and youngest daughter.
How these Trigrams can be helpful for us?
We a part of cosmos, these trigrams can also put light on our current situation.
The predictions reflect our current energy and the possible course of action that can help turn around the situation.
The suggestion may come off as an advice to either retreat from action or perform it.
Also, there are various factors that need to be considered while interpretation. This means reading each line from top to bottom.
Not for every inquiry, but sometimes a second histogram can also be obtained if the first histogram contains a moving line.
In that case, the juxtaposition of the description obtained from the line number in the second hexagram is compared to the same line number in the first histogram.
So, overall you have to learn a lot of facets and keep practicing to come out with accurate predictions.
But consulting some good books on I Ching can help you make clear interpretations.
The method used to obtain the hexagram
Two methods used to determine the hexagram (two trigrams) are yarrow sticks and 3 coin method.
Some people prefer to us special Chinese coins but three value (currency) coins of the same type can also be used.
Though yarrow sticks give more accurate results but with proper intention setting one can use coin method as well.
I personally prefer the coin method where you have to throw three coins six times to obtain six lines to make one histogram.
Are the predictions set in stone?
No, it suggests the most likely outcome that is bound to come considering the present circumstances and the type of query asked.
In certain cases moving lines may entirely change the event possible if you follow the advice given by the same.
Also, the timely application of advice is needed to get right what is predicted.
Frame your inquiry in the right state of mind.
